Toshiba Module Group and Microtune Develop Silicon-Based RF Tuner Front End for High-End Digital TVs
-- The Two Companies Combine Engineering Capabilities and Advanced Technologies to Develop Manufacturing-Ready Tuner Subsystem, Based on Microtune's State-of-the-Art Silicon Tuner, for Projection High-Definition TVs

Plano, Texas, United States

To meet consumers' rising expectations for very high performance and reliability in premium, high-end TVs, Microtune(R) Inc. (Nasdaq:TUNE) and the Toshiba Module Group have co-operated in the development of a production-ready, digital cable-ready TV Tuner Module. Based on Microtune's advanced MicroTuner MT2111 single-chip tuner, Toshiba's Module is a ready-to-manufacture radio frequency (RF) subsystem that delivers superior picture and audio quality, as well as compliance to the strict U.S. Digital Cable Ready (DCR) regulations, for Toshiba's TVs, which are some of the world's most advanced televisions.

The Toshiba Module Group, the engineering division of Toshiba Corporation (Tokyo), provides the systems electronics for Toshiba televisions. Microtune, inventor of the broadband silicon tuner, is a supplier of RF components for the consumer and automotive markets.

Engineering teams from both companies combined their core competencies and considerable expertise to develop a sophisticated RF-to-video subsystem built around Microtune's miniature single-chip tuner. Toshiba's Module includes the required hardware and software for the critical RF reception and tuning of TV signals. As a versatile subsystem, the Module easily can be incorporated across various Toshiba TV product lines and models as a standard RF component, streamlining design and high-volume production.

Toshiba's RF Module, containing Microtune's MT2111, is planned for deployment in nine of Toshiba's new Projection High-Definition TV models. The TVs are expected be available at retail in the U.S. beginning in fall, 2004. The televisions recently achieved "verification" status by CableLabs(R) for Digital Cable Ready (DCR) products.

"Toshiba is a top brand leader in the worldwide television marketplace, and its reputation for TV quality and excellence is based on state-of-the-art technology, electronics and design," said James A. Fontaine, CEO and President of Microtune. "The Toshiba Module Group is known for its superior engineering capabilities and its commitment to innovation. We were pleased to be working with the Toshiba team on an RF tuner design engineered to support new TV display technologies, configurations, feature sets and U.S. reception standards."

Toshiba's Module complies with U.S. digital TV standards, including the DCR regulations of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for digital cable-ready TVs. Unlike conventional tuners, Microtune's MT2111 offers the equivalent functionality of four tuners (off-air NTSC analog, off-air ATSC digital, cable NTSC analog, and cable QAM digital) in one miniature silicon device.

"By combining our complementary silicon and systems technologies," Mr. Fontaine added, "the Toshiba Module Group developed an RF module solution that reinforces the presence and competitiveness of Toshiba's premiere new TV products."

MT2111 Silicon Tuner

The MT2111 tuner is part of Microtune's new breed of silicon tuners targeted for next-generation TV applications. Fabricated in silicon germanium, the device is a complete dual-conversion analog/digital tuner that integrates all active RF components, including a low noise amplifier (LNA) and intermediate frequency (IF) amplifier on chip. It is engineered to deliver a high level of performance, functionality and integration in a miniature 1/4"-square package.
