SAP Unveils Open Standards-Based Platform to Mobilize Enterprise Applications
SAP Mobile Engine, Based on Java and Web Services Technology, Extends Business to Any User on Any Device in Any Environment

Walldorf, Germany

SAP AG (NYSE:SAP) Thursday announced the SAP Mobile Engine, an open standards-based software platform for mobile business that enables companies to extend enterprise applications to internal and external users in any role, regardless of location or device in both connected and disconnected environments. As the main infrastructure for mySAP(TM) Mobile Business, SAP Mobile Engine helps companies to better leverage their existing enterprise systems through mobile applications and technology that establish new ways to interact with enterprise systems and empower new user communities to participate in collaborative business processes. This results in increased customer satisfaction, profitability, and competitive advantage. The SAP Mobile Engine focuses on handheld devices and complements existing laptop-based technologies. The SAP Mobile Engine is based on open industry standards such as Java technology and Web Services technology, including XML and SOAP.

Mobile applications from mySAP Mobile Business are developed for specific user needs, ranging from the needs of service workers who use devices for many industry-specific applications to a consultant who simply tracks time and expenses on a mobile device for synchronization to a back office system at a later time. The SAP Mobile Engine provides capabilities that support mobile scenarios in cross-industry applications, such as customer relationship management, human resources, supply chain management, business intelligence, and product life-cycle management as well as industry-specific applications tailored for the service provider, chemical/pharmaceutical, and utilities industries. The SAP Mobile Engine also includes technology from the SAP partner Abaco. "Abaco is proud to deliver integral parts of the infrastructure for mySAP Mobile Business, helping SAP customers to mobilize their solutions," said Fernando Alvarez, president and CEO of Abaco.

For example, a service organization can deploy the handheld service application from mySAP(TM) Customer Relationship Management (mySAP CRM) on the SAP Mobile Engine to support its service force anywhere and at any time. This would enable businesses to dynamically deploy staff, equipped with all the information they need, to critical customer sites at a moment's notice. In addition, employees have the ability to update service records, capture expenses and materials used, and even place orders for materials not currently available -- right from the job site via the mobile device. Companies can also decide, based on their business requirements, if this information needs to be updated in real-time or if it can be saved on the device and then synchronized at a later point, thus reducing wireless access costs.

"With mySAP Mobile Business, SAP is simplifying the process of mobilization for its customers," said Peter Zencke, member of the executive board of SAP AG. "The SAP Mobile Engine insulates customers from the complexities of device-level operating systems and wireless networks, which enables customers to focus on running their business while ensuring the future viability of their IT investments."

Embedded within the Mobile Enterprise Portal, the SAP Mobile Engine allows customers to instantly mobilize their business applications in SAP or non-SAP environments, thereby leveraging existing infrastructures and business process implementations and reducing overall cost of ownership.

"We are currently using mySAP(TM) Human Resources (mySAP HR) for human capital management (SAP HR) and intend to increase the flexibility of our mobile inspectors by adding capabilities to capture their time and expenses while on the go," said Dr. Thomas Werner, SAP project manager, at TUV NORD GRUPPE, a leading technical service provider in Europe. "The SAP Mobile Engine and Time & Travel application will allow us to easily and cost-effectively extend our employee self-service solutions, which means we will have more accurate data and employees will be reimbursed in a timely manner."

The device-independent architecture, based on a light local Java-based installation, supports all popular mobile devices and can be deployed across various types of network protocols. Synchronization and replication capabilities ensure reliable, compressed, and encrypted data transfer between any device and any back-end system. As mobile devices, operating systems, and technologies undergo rapid evolution, SAP has ensured the future longevity of its solution set
through the use of open standards, thus allowing customers the freedom to implement solutions with little risk of obsolescence.

"We expect greater than 50 percent of enterprises to extend their existing mission-critical applications such as ERP, CRM, and SFA to mobile and pervasive devices over the next three to four years," said Jack Gold, vice president, META Group. "Most customers desire the ability to get such mobilization technology from their existing solutions providers, rather than having to integrate a third-party add-on package. Application providers who do not offer such capability to their users will be at a competitive disadvantage in the market."
