Media Transasia, the leading publishing house which has such front ranking trade publications as Communications World, Computer World under its Group has conferred Manoj Kohli, CEO, Escotel Mobile Communications Ltd, with the award of 'Telecom Man of The Year' for the year 2000. Last year Mr Rajagopalan, CMD MTNL was felicitated as the 'Telecom Man of The Year'. 

The awards are decided on the basis of an extensive reader based survey conducted over a period of four to five months.

Mr Kohli received the award from Mr N Vittal, Chief Vigilance Commissioner at the ''Techies 2000'' function held in Delhi yesterday. The function was attended by a host of eminent personalities from the information technology and communications industry. 

Commenting on the award Mr Pravir Ganguly, President (IT Group) said, ''I would like to congratulate Mr Kohli towards his efforts in promoting the use of mobile telephony in the states of UP (West), Haryana and Kerala. Mr Kohli through his company Escotel has placed the power of the cellphone in the hands of the local people and ensured connectivity in areas, which were hitherto considered remote and inaccessible. This is a major step in bridging the rural urban divide. Escotel as one of the fastest cellular operators in India with a growth rate higher than the rest of the industry has been a star performer in many ways. The honour is an endorsement of this effort.''

Escotel Mobile Communications Ltd. is a joint venture of Escorts Limited, one of the leading industrial houses in India, and First Pacific Company Limited of Hong Kong. Escorts Limited holds 51% stake in Escotel, while First Pacific holds the balance 49%. Escotel is operating cellular phone services in Uttar Pradesh (West), Haryana and Kerala circles. Today, Escotel provides services in 113 cities, 2000 villages and 61 highway towns, supported by six (6) MSCs / RSM's making it the largest cellular operator in terms of sheer geographical spread. Escotel has got the most extensive roaming tie-ups in the country and provides service in over 544 cities and major highways with Automatic Roaming. It is also providing international roaming in 19 countries including Australia, UAE, UK, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Finland, Singapore, Bahrain, Kuwait, Mauritius, Sweden, Spain, Philippines, Poland, Israel, South Africa, Austria, Switzerland and Indonesia. Escotel has also invested in building up an 1800 km long independent Microwave backbone to ensure reliability of its service and is one of the few operators in the country to do so. Escotel has over 270,000 customers in its three circles and is the market leader in its circles.
