HCL Infosystems Limited and Wipro recognized for Business Excellence and TVSE for Exports

MAIT, the apex body representing hardware manufacturers and IT service providers, announced the awards for Business Excellence and Exports for the year 1999-2000 at its 18th annual session held in New Delhi on August 4, 2000.

The office Automation Division of HCL Infosystems Ltd. was recognized for level 1 in Business Excellence while its Systems Support Organization and Manufacturing Division, along with the Operations and Customer Services, Enterprise Products and a section of Solutions & Services of Wipro InfoTech were given recognition in the level 2 category.

The award for Excellence in Exports for the period 1999-2000 was given to TVS Electronics Ltd. TVSE is India's leading exporter of UPS and other power supply units and also a market leader in dot-matrix printers in the domestic market. The MAIT Recognition for Business Excellence is a change agent that supports member organizations to bring about a qualitative transformation in their work culture and helps them to offer better services to their customers. This programme, based on European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) model, emphasizes self-assessment. The underlying principle of ‘Inclusion' in the programme facilitates recognition of sizeable population of the applicants. The recognition programme has 4 levels and also a foundation level based upon degree of rigour and assessment.

Delivering his keynote address, Mr Prabir Sengupta, Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, said "Quality is the basic underlying principle for excellence be it in exports or business excellence. We have to develop this essence of quality consciousness in the Indian industry today, else we will loose out to competition. The Indian industry is slated to hit the zero duty regime as part of our commitment to the IT agreement of the WTO and the pressure for survival will be even more on the industry. It is only by adopting best business practices that we can we survive in the global market."

The awards ceremony marked the culmination of the day long 18th Annual session of MAIT, built around the theme ‘Economic Prosperity Through Hardware'. The Guests of Honour at the session were H.E. Richard Celeste, The Ambassador of United States in India and Mr P V Jayakrishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Information Technology. Speakers of international repute including Mr Chan Soon Tat, Director, Dell Asia Pacific; Mr Samir Inamdar, Managing Director, Tyco Electronics Corp and Mr Satish Kumar, Vice President, Nest Systems Pvt Ltd., also addressed the session.
