LIFW 'Gala Designer Show', a runaway success
40 top designers dazzled Delhiites with their choicest fares

The Lakme India Fashion Week Gala designer show organized by FDCI, the apex body of Indian designers, in the capital at the Darbar Hall, Taj Palace saw the creations of 40 designers including Rohit Bal, JJ Valaya, Krishna Mehta, Kiran Uttam Ghosh, Deepika Govind, Meera & Muzaffar Ali, Monisha Jaising among others, showcased. An encapsulation of the LIFW 2001 held in Mumbai the presentation was to integrate and present the best of LIFW 2001 and an update for the coming season to fashion conscious Delhiites.

The show had 18 female and 4 male models sashay down the runaway presenting three of the most outstanding outfits from each designer's prêt and diffusion collections.

"We are extremely pleased at the response to the event and we are more than delighted to present New Delhi with a taste of the LIFW 2001 event in Mumbai. This is also a first step towards a bi-annual fashion week in India, just like in other fashion capitals of the world" said Sumeet Nair, Executive Director, FDCI.

The LIFW Gala Designer Show was title-sponsored by Lakme Lever. Sunsilk was the associate sponsor while the Taj Palace Hotel was the official venue for the event. Kingfisher, Fiat and Channel [V] continued as co-sponsors for the event. Lycos is the official website, Cathay Pacific came in as the official international airline, and Air Sahara is the official domestic airline.

Lakme India Fashion Week 2001 was held from August 6-12, 2001 at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai. India's leading models, choreographers, make-up artists, hair stylists, set designers, sound and light specialists brought to life the Prêt-a-porter (ready-to-wear) and Diffusion (a line between ready-to-wear and trousseau/couture) collections, designed by 44 of India's best designers through 27 shows over seven days of heightened business activity. A 'by invitation only' event, Lakme India Fashion Week 2001 had over 15,000 visitors ranging

from buying houses to domestic trade buyers, the textile industry, media as well as sponsor and designer guests.

IMG is exclusively responsible for all commercial aspects as well as the event management of Lakmé India Fashion Week. FDCI and IMG work closely together through the year to ensure that Lakmé India Fashion Week meets international standards.

FDCI, the national apex body of Indian fashion, was formed in 1998 with professionals across the fashion industry. The FDCI has been initiated with the specific endeavor to foster growth in the fashion industry and help expand the target customer base. In short, promote The Business of Fashion for the Indian fashion industry in India and internationally. Under the aegis of the Textile Ministry, FDCI provides a platform for designers and encourages investments and professional input in design labels.
