IILM, New Delhi - Spearheading Responsible Management Education in India
New Delhi, Delhi, India

Underscoring the role of management education in addressing sustainable development challenges – a group of 25 higher education institutions joined United Nations Under-Secretary-General Yukio Takasu in New York on 19 September 2013 for the launch of PRME Champions at the side lines of the Global Compact Leaders Summit 2013.

The representatives of PRME Champion institutions have made an ambitious commitment to work collaboratively to develop and promote activities that address barriers to making responsible management education a reality. The PRME Champions group will work to refine what leadership training covers in the space of responsible management education, identify criteria for recognition of progress, and lay out a roadmap for continuous improvement by all in the PRME community.

The group also pledged to engage PRME more actively with United Nations agencies, funds, and programmes, as well as participant companies of the UN Global Compact.

IILM Institute for Higher Education, New Delhi has been inducted into the United Nation's PRME initiative as global champion for the Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME). Only 25 business schools around the world have been awarded champion status at the Global Leaders meeting, held in New York on 19th and 20th September 2013.

IILM Dean Academics Professor Rakesh Chaudhry, attending the launch event, noted that "IILM is pleased to be counted among the global leaders asked to lead this important work. Our selection as a PRME Champion reinforces our commitment to preparing responsible leaders, esp. in view of the fact that IILM Institute for Higher Education, New Delhi is the only business school from India in the list of UN PRME champions."

PRME Champions has three lead groups working in areas of Curriculum Development, Faculty Development and Research. IILM is a co lead for the Faculty Development sub group along with Copenhagen Business School Denmark, and Babson College, USA.

PRME initiative now has over 500 signatories from 81 countries.

In the Post-2015 era, business schools and higher education institutions have a critical role to play as well." Mr. Takasu encouraged participants to reflect on how these new global priorities will challenge academic institutions to adapt curriculum and research paradigms.

The Principles for Responsible Management Education

As institutions of higher education involved in the development of current and future managers we declare our willingness to progress in the implementation, within our institution, of the following Principles, starting with those that are more relevant to our capacities and mission. We will report on progress to all our stakeholders and exchange effective practices related to these principles with other academic institutions:

Principle 1 | Purpose: We will develop the capabilities of students to be future generators of sustainable value for business and society at large and to work for an inclusive and sustainable global economy.

Principle 2 | Values: We will incorporate into our academic activities and curricula the values of global social responsibility as portrayed in international initiatives such as the United Nations Global Compact.

Principle 3 | Method: We will create educational frameworks, materials, processes and environments that enable effective learning experiences for responsible leadership.

Principle 4 | Research: We will engage in conceptual and empirical research that advances our understanding about the role, dynamics, and impact of corporations in the creation of sustainable social, environmental and economic value.

Principle 5 | Partnership: We will interact with managers of business corporations to extend our knowledge of their challenges in meeting social and environmental responsibilities and to explore jointly effective approaches to meeting these challenges.

Principle 6 | Dialogue: We will facilitate and support dialog and debate among educators, students, business, government, consumers, media, civil society organisations and other interested groups and stakeholders on critical issues related to global social responsibility and sustainability.

We understand that our own organisational practices should serve as example of the values and attitudes we convey to our students.
