Ford India partners with Hindustan Motors to make engines and transmissions in India
New Delhi, Delhi, India

Ford India Limited today announced a strategic partnership with Hindustan Motors Limited (HML) for the manufacture of automobile engines and transmissions in India. Engines and transmissions for Ford India Limited will be manufactured at HML's state-of-the-art machining and assembly plant at Pithampur near Indore in Madhya Pradesh.

"We are proud to be the first global automobile company to source engines and transmissions from a local partner," said David Friedman, Managing Director and President of Ford India Limited. "Ford India’s strategic partnership with Hindustan Motors Limited reaffirms our commitment to India and I am confident this collaboration will be a trendsetter in the Indian automobile industry."

C K Birla, Chairman, Hindustan Motors Limited, commenting on the occasion said, "We have been manufacturing high-quality engines & transmissions for our Isuzu and Mitsubishi range of products at our Pithampur Plant. Our proven experience was a logical step for Hindustan Motors and Ford India Ltd, to come together. This indeed represents a very special relationship and marks the beginning of an association, which I believe will be mutually rewarding for both Ford India and Hindustan Motors".

The partnership with HML is yet another path-breaking initiative by Ford India Limited. Ford is the first global company to develop a car, the Ford IKON, especially for India, with a localisation content of 75 per cent right from the start. Ford India currently leads the Indian automobile industry in exports. The Ford Mondeo, launched recently in India, made history as the first imported car to come to India since 1948 when the government imposed restrictions on car imports. Ford India is the first company to launch Ford Assured, an initiative to buy and sell used cars with complete transparency. Ford India dealers offer fully integrated service facilities including sales, service, spares, used cars buying and selling, and finance, to its customers under one roof. Ford has also set up a software development center, Ford Information Technology Services India (FITSI) in India to cater to Ford’s Asia Pacific operations.

The partnership with HML will enable Ford India to develop its supply base in India, thus providing a high degree of flexibility in evolving new products in the future. The alliance will be a giant step forward in HML’s aspiration to emerge as a global manufacturer of world-class engines and transmissions, offering the company an insight into Ford’s global technology and manufacturing practices.
