Ford India announces winners for the Ford Conservation & Environmental Grants Programme
Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India

Ford India today announced the winners of the Ford Conservation & Environmental Grants (C&E) Programme in an awards ceremony held at IIT, Madras. Dr Palanichami, IAS, Secretary, Environment & Forest Department, Government of Tamilnadu, presided over the function and presented the grant to five winners from the adult and youth category. The winners for the grant are:

ADULT CATEGORY
1. Madras Crocodile Bank Trust - an "Integrated Environment Education" project on reptile preservation
2. Wildlife Society of Orissa - "Operation Kachhapa," a project on sea turtle conservation

YOUTH CATEGORY
1. Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Senior Secondary School, K K Nagar, Chennai - a project on Vermi-composting
2. C S I Ewart Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Chennai - a project on Vermiculture
3. Vidyodaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Chennai - a project on Rainwater Harvesting

The total grant amount of Rs 15 lakhs (USD $ 30,000) has been distributed among the winners to support their projects that will help in the preservation of their local environment, heritage and natural resources.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr David Friedman, Managing Director, Ford India Limited, said, "We at Ford India, are proud to recognize and support these groups of deserving individuals and organizations who are motivated in making the world a better place for themselves and for generations to come."

The Ford C&E grants programme follows the Henry Ford Conservation Awards, which has been running in Europe with a vision to encourage a wide range of people/organisations to initiate projects that help their local environment, heritage and natural resources. The programme was introduced in India to recognise individuals and organisations committed to environmental protection and conservation in the country.

Every year Ford India invites applications from individuals / groups across India and have an independent panel of eminent judges identify the most deserving candidates for the grant.

This year's panel consists of the following distinguished judges from various walks of life:

-- Dr Natrajan, Director IIT, Chennai;
-- Mr M B Nirmal, Founder Chairman, Exnora International;
-- Mr Arun Bewoor, Chairman - Environmental Sub Committee, CII;
-- Professor S S Gokhale, Aerospace Engineering & Dean of Students, IIT Madras;
-- Professor Mega Singh, Applied Mechanics, IIT Madras;
-- Professor Susy Verughese, Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras and
-- Professor S P Subramanian, Ocean Engineering, IIT Madras
