ESCOTEL BEGINS THE YEAR WITH A BANG; CROSSES 3 LACS CUSTOMER BASE
Records 70 per cent faster growth rate than industry

Escotel, one of the leading cellular operators in the country and the largest cellular service provider for UP (West), Haryana and Kerala, today announced that it has crossed the 3 lacs customer base and has registered an impressive growth of 160 per cent in its subscriber base in the calendar year Jan-Feb 2000. According to the data circulated by Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) to all cellular operators this is 70 per cent higher than that of the industry, which in the same period grew by only 90%.

Escotel has also been the fastest operator to increase its subscriber base from 2,00,000 to 3,00,000. This was done in a record time period of less than 6 months. With this it has also become the first operator in category 'B' circles to have crossed the 3,00,000 customer base. While Escotel services address a circle population of 111 million people constituting 11.7 per cent of the potential non-metro cellular market of 950 million people, its market share in this category is over 16 per cent. Escotel also has a dominant market share of over 70 per cent in its circles. Escotel has grown the market by encouraging the usage of cellular telephony in its circles by providing consumer friendly services like low entry & usage costs, lower airtime rates for mobile-to-mobile users, offering STD calls at local call rates within its circles.

Announcing this, Mr. Manoj Kohli, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer - Escotel, said, "Even though the circles that we operate in have been classified as 'B' category circles, UP (West) and Kerala have been adding more subscribers than some of the category 'A' circles. This is a result of innovative product launches, quick rollouts, a high quality network supported by aggressive sales & marketing, distribution and excellent customer care." Mr. Rajiv Burman, Chief Officer - Customer Acquisition and Retention, Escotel added, "At Escotel, we are constantly working at innovative ways to expand our markets and are changing the perception towards cellular telephony. During the year we introduced many innovative products like "Smart Group" and "MY CITY CARD" that helped us penetrate new customer segments including those constituting of employees, students and housewives."

Escotel Mobile Communications Ltd. is a joint venture of Escorts Limited, one of the leading industrial houses in India, and First Pacific Company Limited of Hong Kong. Escorts Limited holds 51% stake in Escotel, while First Pacific holds the balance 49%. Escotel is operating cellular phone services in Uttar Pradesh (West), Haryana and Kerala circles. Today, Escotel provides services in 123 cities, 2500 villages and 77 highway towns, supported by six (6) MSCs / RSM's making it the largest cellular operator in terms of sheer geographical spread. Escotel has got the most extensive roaming tie-ups in the country and provides service in over 544 cities and major highways with Automatic Roaming. It is also providing international roaming in 22 countries. Escotel has also invested in building up an 1800 km long independent Microwave backbone to ensure reliability of its service and is one of the few operators in the country to do so.
Escotel has over 300,000 customers in its three circles and is the market leader in its circles.
