Delphi introduces Engine Management Systems Solutions for two-wheelers
Technology to enhance fuel economy and performance

New Delhi, Delhi, India

Delphi Automotive Systems, the world's largest and most diversified supplier of automotive components and systems has introduced its latest Engine Management technology for two-wheelers in India. The new technology is being showcased at Auto Expo 2002, being held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from January 15 to January 22, 2002.

Engine management is the science of equipping and calibrating an engine to achieve clean exhaust emissions while providing the best possible performance, fuel economy and drivability. Engine Management Systems (EMS) are generally used on all modern cars that meet Euro II emission norms or equivalent.

In a natural evolution of its technology to non-automotive applications, Delphi has now adapted its advanced technology in this area specifically for use on two-wheelers. These new fuel-efficient systems will support substantial reduction in noxious emissions with or without catalytic converters. Additionally, these systems will improve vehicle acceleration, drivability and power.

High pollution levels in India have been an issue of concern for the government, manufacturers, environmentalists and users alike who have been pre-occupied with the idea of bringing in more fuel-efficient vehicles that are also easy on the environment.

Speaking on the occasion, Ravi Khanna, Managing Director, Delphi Automotive Systems Ltd said, "With our extensive experience in EMS, we are ready to provide this much-needed technology to the two-wheeler industry in India as well as other parts of the Asia Pacific region. These solutions which address both regulatory and consumer requirements help by reducing emissions and improving fuel economy."

Worldwide last year, Delphi booked new orders for EMS worth more than US$ 500 million. The Asia Pacific region generated much of this new business driven by evolving concern for improved emissions in high density, developing economies.

The technology essentially entails the control of the engine air and fuel inflow and ignition to an onboard microcomputer or also known as engine control module (ECM), the ECM in turn controls an injector fitted in the inlet port. Fuel injection and injection is timed precisely to provide an optimal combustion situation for a wide variety of external variants like the load on the engine, air temperature and barometric pressure which are coupled with additional input from sensors which measure the position of the crank, shaft, engine temperature and throttle position.

The EMS replaces the existing carburetor and the ignition electronics. Multi-dimensional control of the fuel inflow for every conceivable driving condition results in lower emissions, betters drivability, acceleration and power, cold start performance and fuel consumption.
