Delphi Automotive Systems and STMicroelectronics team up to design next-generation smart power ICs for automobiles
Combining ST's best-of-class silicon expertise and Delphi's best-of-class system expertise at product conception optimizes system architecture to reduce cost and accelerate time-to-market
MI, Troy, United States

STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) and Delphi Automotive Systems (NYSE: DPH) today announced their intention to cooperate on the design and development of new smart power IC products for automotive applications. The companies signed a joint agreement to build on their previous relationship and strengthen ST's commitment to the automotive market. STMicroelectronics is the third largest supplier of ICs for automotive applications according to Dataquest and the second largest according to Strategy Analytics (formerly BIS Strategic Decisions). Delphi Automotive Systems is the largest producer of vehicle systems and components in the world.

The ICs that result from the joint development will be manufactured in ST's advanced BCD process, which integrates bipolar circuits for precision analog functions, CMOS circuits for high-density logic, and DMOS circuits for power devices into a monolithic IC. The agreement insures that Delphi will have access to ST's new BCD process developments.

"Smart power ICs are key components in future automotive systems because they are the interface between the delicate processors and real world hardware like motors, solenoids, lamps and loudspeakers," said Aldo Romano, General Manager of ST's Telecommunication and Peripheral/Automotive Groups. "We are pleased to be working with the leading automotive electronics company on the development of these components."

"The smart power IC collaboration between Delphi and STMicroelectronics brings together key leaders in semiconductors and automotive systems to develop optimal silicon solutions," said Les Wilkinson, general director of Engineering for Delphi Delco Electronics Systems. "Our relationship with a recognized industry leader in smart power semiconductors will provide Delphi additional access to key technologies for automotive electronics."

Multi-national Delphi Automotive Systems, with headquarters in Troy, Mich., USA, Paris, Tokyo and São Paulo, Brazil, is a world leader in mobile electronics and transportation components and systems technology. Delphi's three business sectors - Dynamics & Propulsion; Safety, Thermal & Electrical Architecture; and Electronics & Mobile Communication - provide comprehensive product solutions to complex customer needs. Delphi has approximately 198,000 employees and operates 196 wholly owned manufacturing sites, 43 joint ventures, 53 customer centers and sales offices and 32 technical centers in 43 countries. Delphi can be found on the Internet at www.delphiauto.com.

STMicroelectronics is the world's third largest independent semiconductor company. The Company shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange, on Euronext Paris and on the Milan Stock Exchange. The Company designs, develops, manufactures and markets a broad range of semiconductor integrated circuits (ICs) and discrete devices used in a wide variety of microelectronic applications, including telecommunications systems, computer systems, consumer products, automotive products and industrial automation and control systems. In 2000, the Company's net revenues were $7,813.2 million and net earnings were $1,452.1 million. Further information on ST can be found at www.st.com.
