Delphi Automotive Systems, the world's largest and most diversified supplier of automotive components and systems today announced the inauguration of its global technical center in Bangalore. The facility was inaugurated today by Mr Vivek Kulkarni, Secretary, Information Technology, Government of Karnataka. Mr David Wohleen, Executive Vice-President, Delphi Automotive Systems and President, Delphi Delco Electronics Systems was also present on the occasion. The state-of-the-art center envisages a work force of about 300 people. In addition, the center is expected to contribute US$ 25 million to the region's economy over the next three years.

The facility will focus initially on embedded software development for automotive controllers such as engine and powertrain controllers, antilock brakes, instrument clusters, air control and mobile multi-media systems. The Technical Center will also develop significant capability in math-based technologies, including Computer Aided Design/Engineering and become a part of Delphi's global competency that links its engineering structure and resources around the globe.

Inaugurating the center today the IT State Secretary, Mr Vivek Kulkarni said, ‘‘The Technical Center is yet another milestone achieved by Delphi. The Center symbolizes the dynamism of the company by revealing the synergies between automotive engineering and software development for automotive controllers. I wish Delphi all the best, and hope that it succeeds in its endeavor to develop the center into a powerful, globally competitive unit.'' Speaking on the occasion, Mr David Wohleen, Executive Vice-President, Delphi Automotive Systems and President, Delphi Delco Electronics Systems said, Delphi has played a leadership role in evolving an array of innovative technologies that integrate cellular phone, audio, Internet and personal computers. Delphi has established the center to develop software for some of these innovative technologies and with the support of the extremely talented Indian professional workforce it is all set to go a long way. I look forward to great contributions from Technical Center India.''

While software development is our initial thrust, Delphi Technical Center India will be a key component of Delphi's math-based engineering strategy, said Ashok B. Ramaswamy, Director, Delphi Technical Center India, Delphi Automotive Systems.

Delphi Technical Center India is part of a concerted effort to meet the increasing demand for software in the automotive environment. The recent increase in demand for electronic and mobile multimedia products in vehicles has dramatically increased Delphi's need for vehicle software engineering and development. In addition to the new technical center, Delphi Delco Electronics Systems is currently recruiting software, design and test engineers for this growing segment in the US.

Delphi, the leader in mobile multimedia products has witnessed growth in its product line with $114 million in sales in the third quarter, representing a 97 percent increase over second quarter 2000 results. The business was recently placed in a new aggressive growth product line category and structure to intensify the company's focus on mobile communication and the mobile multimedia market.

Delphi Technical Center India is expected to expand to offer additional expertise in Computer Aided Engineering, Electrical Computer Aided Design, Mechanical Computed Aided Design and Research & Development. Initially, in addition to software engineers from Delphi Delco Electronics Systems, the center will house approximately 15 systems, mechanical, electrical and manufacturing engineers from other Delphi divisions. Other divisions represented at the center will include Delphi Energy & Chassis Systems, Delphi Thermal Systems, Delphi Steering Systems and Delphi Research and Development.

In India, Delphi Automotive Systems Limited has been operating as a wholly owned subsidiary of the parent company since 1995. There are four manufacturing facilities and five divisions in the country. These are located in Bangalore, NOIDA and Gurgaon. Delphi's key customers in India include Maruti Udyog Limited, General Motors India, Daewoo Motors, Fiat, Hindustan Motors, Volvo and Telco. Delphi has recently expanded its presence in the replacement market with the launch of shock absorbers, struts and half shafts as the first products in the market.
