DC Design launches super bus "Lextran Orion"
To increase market share to 20 per cent in next two years
New Delhi, Delhi, India

DC Design, the pioneer and leading automotive design and Prototype Company of India, has announced the launch of its super bus "Lextran Orion". The bus, which has a unique and pioneering design, is on display at the ongoing Auto Expo at DC Design's stall no. X 708 outside Hall no. 7 FGH.

DC Design currently has a fully integrated manufacturing facility for bus bodies at Silvassa, Gujarat and has a current capacity of ten bus bodies a month. The company plans to double its manufacturing capacity by mid 2002. The company currently has an eight per cent market share, which it plans to increase to 20 per cent in the next two years. While South India has been traditionally a strong market for the buses, the company is planning to aggressively seek other markets in the country. The main target consumers are tour-bus operators, luxury hotels, resorts, intercity fleet operators and corporates.

Announcing the launch of the super bus, Mr Dilip Chhabaria, Managing Director and CEO, DC Design, said, "We operate in the high-end luxury segment and do not have any major competition as there are no original players in this segment owing to taxation anomalies. We plan to leverage our design and prototyping strengths at Silvassa facility to increase our market share substantially over the next two years. We plan to introduce new models in the market and backed by our domain knowledge and expertise, we will be able to sustain our high growth."

The "Lextran Orion" has been designed at the state-of-art design center, which is manned by a team of trained design engineers and incorporates the latest design technology using Computer Aided Styling and CAD facilities. The design center is one of the best in the country and under the leadership and vision of Dilip Chhabaria, it has gained international recognition. The bus has been designed using the latest technology and best software such as Alias/ Catia, Opticore and IDEAS. The components of Orion have been developed through in-house digitizing and Class A surfacing, which gives it a surface finish comparable to that of a passenger car. The bus has a steel tubular body with aluminum skin construction.

It uses matted 2K paint systems as a standard application and has proprietary lighting systems, developed in-house, which are highly detailed, complex and futuristic. The bus has large panoramic winding glazing to give extended view to the passengers with a feeling of spaciousness, integrated, flushed and fold out footsteps at front fascia, proprietary grab handles and locking systems for doors, body contoured head and tail lamps and chrome accents. It is equipped with large breathing grill fascia and has one large piece front windscreen. The bus has unique doors with attributed ventilation assent. DC Design has managed to extract the best from its strategic partners, namely the suppliers for key components of air-conditioning, painting, seating and suspension.

DC design is showcasing a very interesting line of products at the on-going Auto Expo. The company will be unveiling six new concepts during the show. On display will be "Infidel"- a super sports car; "Single" - a CBZ motorcycle; "Attractor" - on the Mahindra Bhoomiputra tractor; "Prokit" - on the Fiat Palio; E Class Mercedes redesign and the "Lextran Orion" 34 seater super bus on the Ashok Leyland platform.

DC Design is the leading automotive design and prototyping company of India. The company was incorporated in 1993 at Mumbai for the purpose of providing design related services to the Automotive Industry. The company has 450 prototypes in eight years, which is a record. The company has worked with auto majors including Mercedes, Honda, Telco, M&M, Toyota, Maruti, Fiat, Kinetic, Ford, Ashok Leyland, etc. The company is poised for growth internally and will be represented at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show to be held in March 2002 with an eye towards marketing its services abroad, specially in Europe. The company presently employs 400 people in two facilities spread over 100,000 sq ft.

The company's revenues and business are divided into four main streams. The Design & Prototyping division has over 70 ground up prototypes in its portfolio, which is a record. It is highly acclaimed for high quality and styling design sensitivity that is distinct and original. Customizing provides the magic power to an individual to own a distinctly unique vehicle. The company has designed over 450 sensitive, radical and distinct custom vehicles in the last eight years. DC Trends has the 'Prokit' and 'Octane' series of individual body kits for cars and bikes. Affordable facelifts propagates the DC brand horizontally with faster turnout. DC Xclusives are primarily meant for constant innovation within the Company and the DC Lextran range of luxury buses.

The entry of DC into the bus business as well as its entry into the standard add on kits as well as other standard products like home on wheels, office on wheels and showroom on wheels is strategic to move the business away from its total dependence on intellect driven earnings. This move gives the company stability through a mix of standard manufacturing products as well as design led revenues. This also helps in bringing the product costs down due to the design input being recovered over more number of vehicles as against only one in the customization route. This makes us very competitive in the particular segment, while at the same time offering highly stylized products with world-class fit and finish.
