This year too the event will involve more designers, models, shows, buyers and visitors."

In the first ever Lakme India Fashion Week 32 designers from eight cities across the country presented their prêt lines. Following the success of the event, the second Lakme India Fashion Week 2002, which was held at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai, witnessed collections of 44 designers, showcasing both prêt and diffusion lines.

"Market sensitivity is critical to the growth of this sector and the event presents a platform to designers to be able to combine their skills of style and salability," Kaul added.

Recognising the need of the new designers to be prepared in advance on the sales and business front before they take part in the Lakme India Fashion Week, FDCI is organizing a workshop for designers on July 12-13, 2002 in New Delhi. The workshop titled: 'Business of Fashion' will touch on subjects ranging from logistics, managing intellectual property, tax issues, range planning, labor laws and other issues pertaining to production and quality.

FDCI is the proprietor of India Fashion Week with Lakme as the title sponsor. Sunsilk continues to be the associate sponsor. Kingfisher, Fiat and The Taj are the co-sponsors of the event, with Air Sahara returning as the Official Domestic Airline. Star World will be the lead broadcaster of Lakme India Fashion Week 2002.

Speaking on the occasion, Anil Chopra, Business Head - Lakme Lever, said, "As the undisputed leader in the beauty business, Lakme has displayed a deep-rooted commitment towards development of the beauty and fashion industry. Lakme India Fashion Week continues to be one of Lakme's biggest initiatives and provides us a great opportunity to take contemporary fashion to the doorsteps of the Indian woman"

Announcing Lakme's panel of designers for this year Anil said, "This year we have chosen to work closely with three of India's leading designers - Suneet Varma, Monisha Jaisingh and Rajesh Pratap. These designers will display their interpretation of the Lakme fashion statement at the Lakme Grand Finale show." He further added, "While last year Lakme's trend-setting fashion statement - Shimmer, Shine, Sparkle received a tremendous response from consumers and trade, we are confident of exceeding their expectations this year as well."

FDCI has retained IMG to handle all the commercial aspects and the management of the event. IMG is the world's largest sports, leisure and entertainment marketing company which owns and conducts 7th on Sixth (New York Fashion Week) and owns IMGModels, the number one modeling agency in the world.

"The fact that there was an overwhelming response from designers to participate in Lakme India Fashion Week is a reflection of the success of the event," said Ravi Krishnan, Managing Director - IMG-TWI South Asia, Senior International Vice President - IMG.

"IMG will continue to ensure that the event is planned and organized to truly international standards, and that we work together to reach new heights every year. We would like to thank Hindustan Lever for their commitment, and all the other sponsors for their continued support," he added.

A 'by invitation only' event, Lakme India Fashion Week 2002 is a trade event expected to have over 15000 visitors ranging from buying houses to domestic and international trade buyers, the textile industry, media as well as sponsor and designer guests. During the week, the event will also host a range of interactive 'business of fashion' seminars covering various facets of the industry.

Attendees will not only witness the latest collections from India's leading designers, but also get to see India's best --- models, make-up trends, hairstyles and accessories for the upcoming season.

Spread over the entire Taj Palace Convention Centre, the venue will contain the main show area, an exhibition area, an on-site media centre, trade buyer hospitality lounge, an on-site café and a section for other sponsor driven events.

Top-notch professionals in the fashion industry came together in December 1998 to form the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). The Council has been set up to consolidate its position in the global marketplace and this embodies the first step taken towards according corporate status to the fashion business in India. Its primary objective is to provide a cohesive platform for Indian designers and act as the mouthpiece of the industry at all relevant platforms, in a bid to promote Indian fashion-both at home and abroad.
