The countdown to the Lakme India Fashion week has begun. The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), the apex body of Indian designers, today announced the names of the leading Indian models who would set the ramp on fire in the first ever "Lakme India Fashion Week" and bring alive the prêt collections of India's chosen designers.

Sheetal Malhar, Madhu Sapre, Ujjwala Raut, Jessie Randhawa, Nina Manuel, Fleur Xavier, Aditi Govatrikar, Dipanita Sharma, Diya Abraham, Sampada, Mallika Mathur, Joey Mathews, Kiran Rao, Tina Choudhary, Ayesha Prem, Bhavna Singh, Walusha, Aparna Kumar, Vidisha Pavate, Viveka Babaji, Bipasha Basu, Bindu Vashisht, Carol Gracias, Sapna Kumar, Ruchi Malhotra, Shweta Jaishankar, Michelle Innes, Indrani, Bhavana Sharma, Tapur, Swareena Singh, Poonam Nath, Rahul Dev, Inder Mohan Sudan, Zulfi Syed, Aditya Bal, Dino Morea, Kelly Dorji, Ajay Balhara, Rajat Raina, Praveen Sirohi, Niketan Madhok would walk the ramp ushering in a new era in the history of Indian fashion.

The seven day mega event will also see participation by four leading international models, leading the pack is Jodie Kidd, current face of Chanel cruise wear.

Making the announcement, Sumeet Nair, Board Member, Fashion Design Council of India said "The Lakme India Fashion Week will bring together the best talent from home and abroad. It will put the Indian fashion industry on the global map and is bound to leave an indelible mark in the psyche of the apparel industry."

"Lakme India Fashion Week is bringing together an exciting mix: India's top models will sashay down the ramp with some leading international models and some upcoming designers will show on the same platform as the established designers. This event promises to herald a new era for the Indian fashion design industry", said Ravi Krishnan, Joint Managing Director, IMG/TWI, South East Asia.

FDCI recently announced the names of the 33 designers who will showcase their designer ready to wear collections through the seven days at the Lakme India Fashion Week being held in New Delhi at Taj Palace from August 17th to August 23rd 2000. A good mix of established and upcoming designers the 33 designers include Ritu Kumar, Rohit Bal, Tarun Tahiliani, Ritu Beri, JJ Valaya, Suneet Varma, Raghuvendra Rathore, Ashish Soni, Gitanjali Kashyap, Bobby & Manju Grover, Rina Dhaka, Manish Malhotra, Manoviraj Khosla, Monapali, Puja Nayyar, Aparna Chandra, Anamika Khanna, Malini Ramani, Anshu Arora Sen, Kiran Uttam Ghosh among others.

The Lakme Indian Fashion week will be open to visitors by invitation only. It is expected to have over 5000 visitors ranging from individual buyers to institutional buyers, retailers, exporters, the textile industry, print and electronic media as well as sponsors guests. At the first ever trade event, 33 designers will present their prêt lines through 24 fashion shows (21 individual shows and three shows with four designers each) in one venue over seven days. The main showing area with the stage and the ramp will have a seating capacity of 450-500 people. Additionally, there will be a specific area at the venue earmarked for static exhibits by designers for the entire duration of the event. There will be an on site media centre, an area for corporate hospitality, an exhibit area for sponsors and a lounge cum café.

Lakme India Fashion week is being held in association with Sunsilk, Kingfisher, the official beer, Fiat, the official vehicle, wahindia.com, the official website with a dedicated channel for Lakme India Fashion Week and the Taj Group of Hotels. Attendees will not only witness the latest collections from India's top designers but also get to see the best models, make up trends, hairstyles and accessories for the upcoming season. Besides the events by Lakme and Sunsilk through the week, FIAT, the official vehicle will donate its latest offering, the ‘FIAT Weekender' to FDCI who in turn will auction it during the event. The proceeds from this auction will go to a cancer research charity organisation.

FDCI is partnering with IMG to organise and market the event. IMG is a leading international event management and marketing company, which exclusively represents the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), plays a vital role in successfully conducting New York Fashion week and owns IMG Models, the second largest agency in the world.

Top-notch professionals in the fashion industry came together in December 1998 to form the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), with the key objective of fostering the growth of the entire fashion industry in India and internationally. Under the aegis of the Textile Ministry and in close working relationship with institutions like NIFT, FDCI will provide a platform for designers, encourage investments and professional input in design labels and aid the growth of the designer ready to wear lines by developing the entire fashion supply chain through backward linkages with suppliers, mills, etc., and forward linkages with the retail and distribution network.
