ALL HLL TEA PACKS TO CARRY '100 PER CENT VEGETARIAN' DECLARATION
Brooke Bond and Lipton tea brands have always been and will remain 100 per cent vegetarian

New Delhi, Delhi, India

Hindustan Lever Limited (HLL), today announced that packets of its tea brands – Brooke Bond and Lipton will hereafter carry a printed declaration on the packs that the contents are 100 per cent vegetarian and of plant origin. This is being done to communicate to consumers that HLL tea brands have always been and will always remain 100 per cent vegetarian.

This communication has become necessary in the wake of baseless rumours and allegations in certain markets that tea companies were adding extracts of animal origin to tea in order to enhance its flavour.

The declaration will be printed on the packs, which will henceforth be manufactured. For the packs already in the markets or stored in depots and with stockists, the Company has decided to affix specially designed stickers.

Commenting on the initiative, Mr V S Sitaram, Marketing Controller-Beverages, Hindustan Lever Ltd, said, "The declaration on the pack is aimed at reiterating that all HLL tea brands have always been and will always remain 100 per cent vegetarian. Tea is an item of daily consumption in countless households across the country. For a significant section of our population tea is an affordable source of nutrition. Worldwide health experts have found that tea has several health benefits. Therefore, we felt duty-bound to remove all doubts about this essential beverage.''

The Department of Health, Government of India, in order to dispel any doubts on the subject of flavouring of teas, has issued a notification under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Rules on August 2, 2000, which expressly states that tea may contain only natural flavours and flavouring substances that are obtained from materials of vegetable origin.

The HLL brands under the Brooke Bond umbrella are Red Label, Taj Mahal, Super Dust, 3 Roses and A1. The brands under Lipton umbrella are Taaza, Ruby Dust, Tiger and Green Label. Brooke Bond and Lipton brands are produced under stringent quality standards to deliver consumers teas that are fresh and safe.
