19,000 FORD IKONS SINCE INTRODUCTION
2704 In October, Exports Begin

New Delhi, Delhi, India

The premium car segment continues to be the fastest growing car segment, almost doubling by growing 80% so far this calendar year. Sales in the IKON segment have paced a rapid 21,000 cars for the past ninety days. The Ford IKON dominates this segment, capturing 23% share of the domestic sales in October alone, up from Ford IKON's commanding 22% leadership share this calendar year. Ford IKON shipments in October total over 2700 units bringing Ford IKON to 19,000 units since introduction, on track to exceed Ford's 21,000 target.

In a statement from Chennai, John Fink, Ford India's Vice President Marketing, Sales and Service says, "Ford India is very pleased with Ford IKON's performance and segment growth. This time last year Ford India was the only car manufacturer to project that 65,000 cars would be sold in the premium IKON segment during the calendar year 2000. Already this year the segment has registered almost 72,000 sales.

Ford India has started production of Ford IKON CKDs for export, registering an initial export of 1600 Ford IKON CKDs in October 2000.  "This is an important milestone for Ford India and a significant development for the Indian Automotive Industry as we participate in the international market and continue to grow Fords presence in India.  We are pioneering the complex process of CKD exports and are proud to be earning significant foreign exchange for India," said Phil Spender, Managing Director, Ford India.

The Ford India Export plant is located at the Ford India facilities at Maraimalai Nagar, near Chennai.  The Export plant has an area of 5000 sq. meters and is managed by Ford India in association with TVS Lean Logistics. The plant follows stringent quality control processes as per the Ford Production System and is aligned with Ford's International Exports Operations in Europe & North America. Ford India, supported by its strong domestic vendor base supply all Ford IKON parts to the Exports Plant. Ford has introduced global standards of CKD Pack engineering in India and has installed Ford's international software systems for material management & export packaging.

Ford India has increased the number of shifts in the Stamping plant to meet the increased demand from exports.  The Plant now runs on two shifts and will shortly operate the third shift to meet the increasing volumes of export orders.

With the commencement of exports, Ford India has reaffirmed its commitment to India Exports will increase to more than 20,000 units annually. Revenues from this initiative will grow to Rs 165 crores (USD 35 million) in the year 2001 and will continue to grow year over year. Through the export program Ford India is meeting all its commitment with the government of India including EPCG obligation.
