Ford India Ltd
Ford India is a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company, the world's second largest automaker.

In November 1995, Ford established a joint venture company with Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) to assemble and distribute the company's first market offering, the Ford Escort. The company was rechristened Ford India Ltd in February 1999, following a change in equity pattern, which currently is 85:15 with Ford holding the majority stake.

Headquartered in Maraimalai Nagar, near Chennai, Ford India manufactures the Ford IKON at its modern integrated manufacturing facility, spread across 350 acres, at Maraimalai Nagar. The company has also set up an export plant to handle Ford's export requirement exclusively by sourcing auto components locally and assembling kits to export to overseas markets.

With an investment of Rs.1700 crore, Ford India employs a large, local workforce of over eight hundred highly skilled personnel intensively trained at Ford facilities, both in India and overseas. The company endorses equal opportunity and encourages women's participation in the organisation's growth.

Affiliated operations of Ford India include Ford Business Service Centre, Kotak Mahindra Primus Ltd (KMP), Ford Credit Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd, FITSI.

Ford has set up Ford Information Technology Services India (FITSI) in Chennai to cater to the software development requirements of Ford Motor Company in the Asia Pacific region.


Ford India is a prime sponsor of India's motor racing icon Narain Karthikeyan. The company organised a corporate sponsorship consortium to provide training, development, mentoring and financial backing to Karthikeyan in a bid to become the British Formula 3 champion in 2000. With Ford's support Karthikeyan recently became the first Indian to test drive for Formula One.

Ford India is a zinda dil company driven by the spirit of innovation. Several innovative initiatives undertaken by the company include identifying two bright youngsters from Delhi to develop a 'designer' IKON as their interpretation of josh and the release of a Josh Anthem titled 'Aao Josh Mein' sung by well known 'breathless' singer Shankar Mahadevan and written by distinguished lyricist Javed Akhtar.


Ford India has made two endowments for Henry Ford Chairs at the Indian Institutes of Technology in Madras (Chennai) and Delhi, for research in the area of vehicle emission and transportation safety.

Ford India has supplied advanced testing equipment to the Pune-based Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) towards upgradation of the Association's research facilities. Ford India has also provided training of ARAI engineers at its locations, in India and abroad.

Ford India has set up a fully equipped Primary Health Centre named Sanjeevi near its facility in Maraimalai Nagar for the local community. The centre provides free basic medical facilities to local villagers.

The company has made an endowment of two ambulances for the use of Trauma Care Consortium, Chennai, which provides emergency care to accident victims. Ford India has also contributed Rs 16 lakh for running costs.

The company operates a tuition and scholarship programme for students enrolled in Government schools at Maraimalai Nagar and S. P. Koil Street near the plant.

Commitment to environmental sensitivity is embodied in its state-of-the-art waste water treatment plant for recycling water.

Ford India sent a committee of people to the flood stricken parts of Orissa and earthquake-ravaged regions of Gujarat. The team visited far off villages and distributed emergency relief and provisions to Orissa flood victims and Gujarat earthquake victims.

In 2000, Ford Motor Company introduced the Ford Conservation & Environment Grant programme in India. This programme is an annual feature and is aimed towards supporting individuals and organisations committed to the cause of environment conservation.

Ford India received the ISO 14001 certification, the international environmental standard that regulates air, water, handling and recycling. Ford Motor Company is the first automotive company to certify all its plants around the world under ISO 14001.
Products And Services
The First Indian-built Ford Escort rolled off the assembly line in 1996 in a record time of 10 months. Its operational efficiencies and customer focus enabled Ford to create history in the Indian car industry by ensuring simultaneous delivery of the Ford Escort in seven major cities just a month after booking.

Ford Escort has won the J D Power Award in the India Initial Quality Survey in 1997. Ford has also topped the Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) ratings for two consecutive years, in 1997 and 1998, in the Customer Satisfaction Survey conducted by J D Power & Associates.

Ford IKON was launched on November 22, 1999 in two versions, 1.6 L petrol and 1.8 L diesel. Jacques A Nasser, President and CEO, Ford Motor Company, drove the first car off the assembly line.

Subsequent variant launches include the IKON 1.3 CLXi Endura-E petrol, limited editions of the IKON 1.6 Rally Sport, and the IKON SXi

The Ford IKON currently leads the mid-size segment in the Indian automobile industry. The car won the Best Brand award for year 2000.

In mid-2000, Ford India launched Ford Assured, a new initiative to buy and sell used cars. This initiative is a 'first of its kind' venture, in which Ford India along with its dealerships will buy, recondition and sell various models of used cars.

Ford has introduced QualityCare, Ford's branded service initiative that provides car owners with a superior service experience at its dealerships countrywide. India is the first country after the US to implement QualityCare.

The Ford IKON was launched in Mexico on February 20, 2001 and in South Africa on February 14, 2001. Ford India has exported several thousand Ford IKON CKDs to these countries where the Ford IKON has met with an overwhelming success.

Ford India will launch the internationally acclaimed new Ford Mondeo in India by end-2001. The new Ford Mondeo has won more than 30 awards including 11 Car of the Year awards in Europe.

David Friedman took charge as the President and Managing Director of Ford India Limited in September 2001 after completing over fifteen years with Ford. Friedman joined Ford India in end-1998 and has since been a lead player in advancing Ford's operations in the country.

Friedman will lead the new development phase of operations in Ford India and will put in place a growth strategy that will build on Ford IKON's success by introducing new models. This includes Ford India's entry into the D segment with the launch of the new Ford Mondeo scheduled for end 2001.

On his plans for the company, Friedman said, "Ford India has continuously set benchmarks in the Indian automobile industry through its commitment to product innovation, customer care and a strong and viable business structure. The challenge now is to sustain this lead position, and also extend the Ford brand experience to other product segments. The Indian consumer can definitely look forward to more excitement from Ford."

Friedman was previously Vice President - Finance and Systems at Ford India and was instrumental in developing the business model for the company's operations. Apart from heading the financial operations of Ford India, Friedman also played a lead role in establishing Ford Information Technology Services India (FITSI), the hub for Ford's IT initiatives in India and the Asia Pacific region.

Prior to assuming his responsibilities at Ford India, Friedman was Finance Director of Ford Vietnam Ltd. His other roles at Ford include Program Manager, Ford Motor (China) Ltd. and a variety of management positions at Ford Truck Operations and Vehicle Operations that focused on product planning, business strategy, finance and systems.

Friedman joined Ford Motor Company in 1986 as a financial analyst at the Dearborn Engine Plant in the Ford Rouge Complex at Dearborn, Michigan,USA and has been with Ford for over 15 years. Friedman holds a bachelor's degree in International Relations from Georgetown University and an MBA in Finance and Economics from the University of Chicago.


Randy Shockley is the Vice President, Marketing, Sales & Service of Ford India. Shockley has been with Ford for over 20 years and has experience in Asian and American markets in the areas of marketing, sales and service.

In his new role, Shockley will be leading Ford India and its dealers in new initiatives to ensure an increased focus on meeting the evolving needs and expectations of the Indian consumer, and to expand and strengthen the Ford dealer network's presence in the Indian market.

Shockley was most recently on a cross functional assignment as Regional Manager - Ford's Customer Service Division, San Francisco Region from September 1999 to January 2001. California is a key trend setting market and represents the single most important market for Ford Motor Company in USA. In his Regional Manager role, Shockley interfaced with 120 premium Ford and Lincoln-Mercury dealerships on customer satisfaction and parts & service initiatives, as well as worked with dealers in launching best-in-class business practices to better meet the needs and expectations of U.S. consumers.

Shockley was one of the founders of Ford Motor Company in Thailand. In 1996, he was responsible for launching Ford's Thai National Sales Company and building an all new dealer network. He also introduced Ford's first Thai manufactured and assembled product, Ford Ranger, which won "Truck of the Year" honors in 1999. During the period June 1996 to August 1999, he served as Executive Director, Ford Sales (Thailand) Company Limited and successfully led the Company from start-up and through the difficult Asian economic crisis of 1997-1999.

Shockley has spent more than nine years in Asian markets and brings a rich and varied experience to his new position as Vice President of Marketing, Sales & Service for Ford India Limited. In 1992, he assumed responsibility for Ford's Middle East operation and relocated Ford's Middle East Regional Office from the U.S to Dubai, U.A.E. While leading the Middle East organization from February 1992 to May 1996, he expanded Ford's presence in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, U.A.E, Oman, Yemen and Jordan. He also reopened the markets of Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon and initiated Ford's participation in the Middle East Rally Championship. During his tenure, Ford won the Middle East Rally Championship three years in a row with the legendary Mohammed Bin Salem at the wheel.

His intimate experience with the varied cultures and people of Asia make him eminently suitable for his current role in Ford India.

Shockley graduated from the Georgia State University in Finance and has participated in various Ford Motor Company sponsored Executive Management Programs conducted in conjunction with Duke University. He joined Ford Motor Company in 1977 and has assumed numerous developmental assignments with Ford Division, Lincoln-Mercury Division, Ford Customer Service Division, Ford Worldwide Direct Markets Organization and Ford Asia Pacific.
