With interactive installations and curated tours, ART MUMBAI celebrates the intersection of art, fashion, and music, reinforcing Mumbai’s position as gateway to art and culture.
Here are some highlights of ART MUMBAI 2024:
1. Bigger, Brighter, More Inventive
ART MUMBAI returns bigger, brighter and more inventive this year, taking over a larger area at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse and featuring 71 Indian and international galleries and 3 art foundations. Visitors can explore modern and contemporary art from South Asia and beyond. The fair blends the allure of its iconic venue with a diverse display of original works from some of the world’s finest galleries.
2. Insightful Speaker Series
Building on last year’s conversations, the Speaker Series, presented by Kiran Nadar Museum of Art and hosted at the on-site Birla Opus Auditorium, returns to address some of the most urgent issues in the art world such as the technological advancements of AI in art, the limitations of the term South Asia with regard to art, culture and heritage and, most importantly, Indian art's evolving significance on the international stage.
3. In Conversation with Karan Johar
The cast of the Netflix series Fabulous Lives vs Bollywood Wives is set to take the spotlight at ART MUMBAI. Karan Johar, Cultural Ambassador of ART MUMBAI, will lead an entertaining and unfiltered conversation with Neelam, Maheep, Seema, Bhavana, Kalyani, Shalini, and Riddhima on Saturday, November 16.
4. International Galleries and Artworks
This edition of ART MUMBAI promises to be a landmark moment, with works by towering figures of the 20th-century art world such as Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Anish Kapoor and Damien Hirst, among other celebrated artists. The growing international appeal of ART MUMBAI is further underscored by the participation of nine renowned galleries from around the world.
5. Saffronart Showcase
The Saffronart Foundation presents a special exhibition of works on paper by F.N. Souza and V.S. Gaitonde, curated by Dinesh Vazirani and Girish Shahane. This tribute, celebrating their birth centenary year, showcases Souza's gouaches from 1965 and Gaitonde’s early compositions and drawings post-1984, offering a unique insight into their artistic journeys.
6. Expanded Sculpture Walk
The Sculpture Walk has been expanded into an immersive experience, featuring over 20 remarkable pieces from both established and emerging artists. This walk of discovery encourages visitors to explore the intersections of art history, textiles, and sculpture, highlighting the innovative ways in which artists blend these mediums.
Key pieces include Wolf's evocative Sea of Poppies, Robert Indiana’s Love sculpture, Ravinder Reddy's striking Devi, Parag Tandel's Vitamin Sea and Coastal Road Project 3 and Monali Meher's Unknown Landscape.
7. Performance: The Gentlemen’s Club
Step into Mumbai’s vibrant underground club scene with ‘The Gentlemen’s Club’, a bold theatrical performance that brings to life the exhilarating world of the city’s drag kings. Through a dazzling fusion of dance, music, and visual projections, this show presents an exciting and thought-provoking narrative that celebrates artists and their exploration of masculinity in all its complexity and flair.
8. Guided Art Walks by Art & Wonderment
Join guided walkthroughs of the fair led by Art & Wonderment for a deeper, curated experience of ART MUMBAI's installations. These exclusive tours offer access to key exhibits and insightful narratives about each piece.
9. Luxury Shopping at The Arches
Discover luxury at ‘The Arches’ - a dedicated shopping experience with exclusive art-inspired designs from around the world. The ART MUMBAI Retail Store will offer a selection of art and design-based products from various vendors, including select art institutions, museum shops, jewelers, and product designers, providing visitors with a curated collection of artistic and collectible items.
10. ‘Rise’ Artists
As part of ART MUMBAI's commitment to nurturing new talent, the fair will showcase emerging artists, supported by galleries including Art & Charlie, Method, XXL and Gallery 47-A. This platform provides a vital opportunity for up-and-coming artists to present their works, connecting them with collectors and art enthusiasts and fostering the growth of fresh, exciting voices in the art world.
