Wireless Village Initiative Announces Intent to Join the Open Mobile Alliance
The Wireless Village Initiative to continue specification work and interoperability testing within Open Mobile Alliance, leveraging the requirements and participation from broader membership

Vancouver, Canada

The Wireless Village initiative, the leading mobile Instant Messaging & Presence Service (IMPS) forum, Thursday announced its intent to consolidate into the newly formed Open Mobile Alliance by signing a Memorandum of Understanding.

Wireless Village participants will make individual decisions to join the Open Mobile Alliance and to contribute in the IMPS work as part of the consolidation process.

The consolidation of the Wireless Village initiative into the Open Mobile Alliance will help accelerate the development and adoption of mobile IMPS by ensuring interoperability across markets, terminals and operators, throughout the entire value chain. This process represents a natural evolution for the Wireless Village initiative and will further expand industry support of Wireless Village specifications.

The Open Mobile Alliance, which was announced on June 12, 2002, by nearly 200 of the world's leading mobile operators, device and network suppliers, information technology companies and content providers, will collect market requirements and define specifications designed to remove barriers to interoperability and accelerate the development and adoption of a variety of new, enhanced mobile information, communication and entertainment services and applications. The definition of these common specifications and the testing of interoperability will promote competition through innovation and differentiation, while ensuring interoperability of mobile services across the entire value chain.

"Today marks an important milestone in a multi-phased process towards unifying the objectives of Wireless Village together with the goals of the Open Mobile Alliance. Consolidation into OMA is a
remarkable step for the Wireless Village initiative and will instantly give our work broader industry support throughout the wireless industry. We are excited about the possibility of driving mobile IMPS specifications within the Open Mobile Alliance framework", said Frank Dawson, the Chairman of the Wireless Village initiative, Nokia.

"Integration of the Wireless Village specifications and technical vision, in cooperation with the nearly 200 companies behind the Open Mobile Alliance, will help secure the long-term success of Wireless Village as the de-facto standard for IMPS services", said Magnus Kristersson, Vice President of Messaging and Enablers, Ericsson AB.

"With the potential support of 170 Wireless Village initiative participants, the Open Mobile Alliance is poised to gain significant momentum in the IMPS market from the integration of the Wireless Village specifications, interoperability testing, and evangelism work over the past year", said Craig Peddie, General Manager, Lexicus Division, Motorola.

The Wireless Village specification version 1.0, published in February this year, is a powerful catalyst for promoting universal interoperability between mobile and fixed network instant messaging and presence services. In addition to publishing the specifications, the Wireless Village initiative has demonstrated interoperability across different device manufacturers using mobile phones, mobile computing devices, PCs and server products developed by Wireless Village participants.

ABOUT THE WIRELESS VILLAGE INITIATIVE

Founded by Ericsson, Motorola, and Nokia, Wireless Village, the mobile Instant Messaging and Presence Services (IMPS) initiative, was formed in April 2001 to define and promote a set of universal specifications for mobile instant messaging and presence services. The specifications will be used for exchanging messages and presence information between mobile devices, mobile services and Internet-based instant messaging services, all interoperable and leveraging existing internet technologies. Through its Supporters, the Wireless Village initiative is building a vibrant community of users, mobile operators and global business partners where internet and wireless domains converge. The IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization (IEEE-ISTO) provides day-to-day administrative support to the Wireless Village initiative. New members have the opportunity to comment and make contributions to the specification, participate in interoperability events and attend quarterly face-to-face board meetings.
